Help Name New Baby Rhino Calf

02 Nov 2015

Busch Gardens is asking animal lovers to help name the park’s newest addition – a female southern white rhinoceros calf born on 16th October.

The park’s animal care staff selected their top three Swahili names for the calf including:

  • Nyota, which means “star”
  • Nadra, which means “rare”
  • Alasiri, which means “afternoon”

Busch Gardens Tampa is giving all rhino fans the chance to vote. Simply log on to the Busch Gardens Tampa Facebook page and select a favourite name. The poll is open until November 11.

Earlier this week, Kasiri and her calf joined the rest of the park’s southern white rhinoceros herd, also known as a crash, on the Serengeti Plain® habitat. The calf already is very comfortable with her new surroundings. Guests can catch a glimpse of the pair on a Serengeti Safari tour.

Busch Gardens participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) for southern white rhinoceros. The mission of the SSP is to cooperatively manage specific species populations within AZA-accredited facilities.

Be the first to know updates about the calf by following the park’s blog at BuschGardensTampaBlog.com or “Like” the Busch Gardens Facebook page and follow @buschgardens on Twitter and Instagram.
